Schloss Niedernondorf

Schloss Niedernondorf stands in the village of the same name within Waldhausen in Lower Austria. Built in the late 15th century, it is a Renaissance palace set among farm buildings and farmland. The site preserves traces of its medieval predecessor beneath later layers of stone and plaster. The palace has been rebuilt several times, most notably after imperial troops burned it in 1622. By 1655 it appeared as a single-storey building with a gate tower, recorded in Vischer’s topography around 1672. Between the 17th and 19th centuries it was enlarged into a three-winged, two-storey structure with a ten-bay main façade and late-baroque ornament. The Thurn-Valsassina family acquired the property in 1872 and still hold it today. Visitors find a symmetrical three-wing complex arranged around a small courtyard. The main façade shows ten evenly spaced windows under a plain roof. Inside, modest late-baroque plasterwork survives on ceilings and doorframes. The surrounding farmyards and fields give the palace a quiet rural setting, with distant views of the Waldviertel countryside.
