Sender Wittenberg
The Sender Wittenberg stands on the Gallunberg hill in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It is a transmission facility run by Deutsche Telekom AG for FM radio, digital radio and digital television. The main mast is a steel lattice tower 186 metres tall, anchored with cables. Its base sits 134 metres above sea level. Until recently a second free-standing steel lattice tower also carried signals. The site is worth visiting for its engineering scale and the views from the hill. The mast’s height and position make it a landmark visible across the surrounding countryside. It carries programmes for regional broadcasters including MDR and ZDF. The facility has switched from older analogue and DVB-T systems to modern DVB-T2 HD broadcasts. Recent changes mean some channels will cease transmission in early 2025. Visitors find a quiet hilltop location with the tall mast dominating the skyline. The area around the tower is open ground, giving clear sightlines in all directions. On clear days the view stretches over Wittenberg and the Elbe valley. The site itself is fenced and access is restricted, but the hill remains a public space. The tower’s structure and the surrounding landscape offer a straightforward example of broadcast infrastructure in a rural setting.
