Arrandene Open Space and Featherstone Hill

Arrandene Open Space and Featherstone Hill is a 25-hectare nature reserve in Mill Hill, part of the London Borough of Barnet. The site combines open pasture with ancient hedgerows and one of London’s last traditionally managed hay meadows. Unimproved grassland here supports uncommon plants such as greater bird’s-foot trefoil, common knapweed and ox-eye daisy. The reserve also includes Featherstone Hill, a partly wooded rise in the south-west corner. In 1929 Hendon Council bought the land to safeguard it for public use as the area was being built up around it. The reserve is recognised for its wildlife. Wild service trees grow among the hedgerows, and breeding birds include spotted flycatcher, lesser whitethroat, reed bunting and skylark. Public footpaths cross the meadows and climb Featherstone Hill, while a bridleway links the site to local lanes. Three entrances lie in Wise Lane, Milespit Hill and Wills Grove, giving easy access for walkers and riders. The network allows quiet exploration without leaving the borough. Inside the reserve the old hay meadows show colour from spring to summer, with wildflowers attracting butterflies and bees. Featherstone Hill offers views across the surrounding suburbs, especially from its wooded slopes. The hedgerows provide cover for small birds and insects throughout the year. Visitors can walk the paths in any season and still find patches of colour or birdsong. The site remains a green island in a built-up area, kept for nature and for people.
