Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden stands in the spa town of Baden-Baden, a place known for its elegant architecture and cultural life. It occupies a former railway station built in 1904, replacing an earlier station from 1845. The building served as a transport hub until the branch line closed in 1977. Today it houses a modern concert hall alongside preserved railway elements. The complex includes a box office, the Aida restaurant, and the Toccarion children’s music space. The project was led by Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer. The Festspielhaus is Germany’s largest opera and concert house, seating 2,500 people. After opening in 1998, it became the first privately financed opera and concert company in Europe. The venue has hosted the annual Herbert von Karajan Music Prize from 2003 to 2015. It has also attracted leading conductors and orchestras from around the world. The Sigmund Kiener Foundation sponsored the children’s music space inside the building. Visitors enter through the former railway hall, now transformed into a grand foyer. The concert hall itself features excellent acoustics and tiered seating. The Aida restaurant offers meals before performances. The Toccarion space provides interactive music activities for younger visitors. Outside, the building blends with Baden-Baden’s refined streetscape.
