Theater Baden-Baden

Theater Baden-Baden stands on Goetheplatz in the heart of the spa town. Built between 1860 and 1862, it replaced an earlier wooden playhouse and became the city’s cultural centre. The building was commissioned by Edouard Bénazet, once director of the local casino, and designed by Parisian architect Charles Couteau in the style of the Paris Opera. Its grand façade still dominates the square, marking the theatre as a landmark of the 19th century. Inside, the auditorium retains its original ornate plasterwork and gilded detailing. A sweeping staircase leads up to the foyer, where large mirrors reflect the light from tall windows. The building’s scale and elegance announce the importance of the arts in Baden-Baden. The theatre’s history is woven through with premieres by major composers. For its opening in August 1862, Hector Berlioz composed Béatrice et Bénédict, an opera based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. In 1869 Jacques Offenbach conducted the first performance of his operetta La princesse de Trébizonde at the house. Since 1918 the theatre has maintained its own ensemble of actors, while also staging operas and musical works through guest performances and co-productions. A thorough renovation in the early 1990s updated the technical equipment without altering the historic fabric. From the 2026/27 season, Simon Meienreis will lead the theatre, continuing its tradition of artistic innovation. Visitors enter beneath a pediment supported by columns that frame the main doorway. The auditorium seats around 600, arranged in stalls, circle and boxes, all under a domed ceiling painted with classical motifs. The stage measures twenty metres across and is equipped with modern fly-tower machinery. The foyer serves as a gallery for changing exhibitions of stage design and costume sketches. Outside, the theatre overlooks a small park where visitors often pause before performances. The surrounding streets hold cafés and boutiques, linking the cultural visit to the town’s leisurely rhythm.
