Burg Angermund

Burg Angermund stands on an oval island in the Angerbach stream, south of Düsseldorf’s old village core. Its thick ring wall of limestone, tuff and brick still rises two metres high, built in the 13th century to guard the northern edge of the County of Berg. A brick bridge and 15th-century gatehouse give the only entrance, its archway marked by the Ravensberg coat of arms and the date 1635 after repairs. The counts of Berg used the fortress as a frontier post and later as the seat of their local administrator, the Kellner. Inside the round keep, prisoners included political rivals and, in the 16th century, the Anabaptist Johannes Campanus. The main hall retains a large fireplace from the 18th century, though later alterations removed other historic interiors. Today the castle is a private residential complex, its moat still fed by the Angerbach. The medieval curtain wall encloses modern houses arranged around the old courtyard. The gatehouse and parts of the ring wall survive intact, offering a quiet view of the stream and the surrounding meadows.
