Kilmahew Castle

Kilmahew Castle stands in a quiet stretch of Argyll and Bute, north of Cardross. Its ruined tower rises above the Kilmahew Burn, with the overgrown remains of St Peter’s Seminary nearby. The name comes from Saint Mochta, known locally as Mahew, who gave the estate its title. The castle was built on land granted to the Napier family by the Earl of Lennox late in the 13th century. The present tower dates from the 16th century, when the Napiers made it their stronghold for eighteen generations. Among their descendants were engineers who shaped Clyde shipbuilding, including Robert Napier and the partners of Napier & Son. The estate passed through the Maxwell family in the late 17th century, when George Maxwell took the Napier name and arms. After his death in 1744 the line ended, though the heraldry lived on through marriage. An illegitimate daughter, Jean Smith, later claimed the land and sold it to settle gambling debts in 1820. James Burns of Bloomhill bought the estate in 1839 and died there thirty-two years later. The Archdiocese of Glasgow acquired the ruins and grounds in 1948, and in 2020 the Kilmahew Education Trust took charge of the 140-acre estate. Visitors find a four-storey tower hollowed by time, its walls showing 18th-century alterations by John Douglas and 19th-century Gothic touches added by Alexander Sharp. Ivy clings to the masonry, and the Kilmahew Burn murmurs beside the ruins. St Peter’s Seminary’s concrete shells loom nearby, while John Fleming’s walled gardens lie a short walk away. The whole site sits within a wooded landscape that once fed the castle’s hearths and now shelters wildlife. The air carries the scent of damp earth and salt from the Clyde a few miles south.
