Church of the Holy Trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands in the quiet Somerset village of Sutton Montis. Built mainly of Doulting stone, it began as a Saxon church in the 12th century and was later enlarged and restored. The nave and chancel still show their Norman lines, while Victorian builders added new windows and fittings in 1862. Inside, the church seats about eighty people on simple wooden pews. Three ancient bells hang in the west tower, cast in 1420, 1636 and 1764. The octagonal font, carved in the 15th century, holds water for baptisms. A carved wooden pulpit from the 17th century stands beside the chancel arch, and modern equipment allows hymn books to be replaced by screens. A gentle ramp leads to the main door for visitors who need step-free access. The church belongs to the Cam Vale benefice and lies within the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Its plain stone walls and low tower give little hint of the centuries of prayer that have shaped this small country church.
