St. Martin (Niederding)

St Martin’s church stands in the village of Niederding, a short drive from Erding in Bavaria. The present building was raised in 1758 by the town mason Johann Baptist Lethner, replacing an earlier medieval church that had been enlarged and vaulted in 1690 by Hans Kogler. The new structure follows the light, playful lines of the Rococo style, with five bays in the nave and a rounded sanctuary at the east end. Inside, the church glows with three altars carved in 1761–62 by Christian Jorhan the Elder. The high altar shows the patron saint, Martin, flanked by Peter and Paul, while the side altars carry figures of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and local favourites such as Saint Leonard and Saint Florian. A ship-shaped pulpit by the same hand rises above the congregation, and the freestanding font was hewn in 1924 by a Freising stonemason. The organ, built in 1901 by Franz Borgias Maerz, still speaks with nine stops on pneumatic cone chests. A set of fourteen painted stations of the cross lines the walls, guiding worshippers from the entrance to the sanctuary. Above, the tower wears its onion dome like a crown, catching the light of the Bavarian sky.
