Schloss Notzing

Schloss Notzing stands on a gentle rise southwest of the church of St Nikolaus in the village of Notzing, a district of Oberding in Upper Bavaria. It occupies a small park surrounded by a former moat, traces of which remain around the building. The rectangular castle, measuring about fifteen by twenty metres, dates from the late 14th century and was once a water fortress. The castle’s history begins with a medieval fortress built in the 14th century. It passed through the hands of Munich patricians, mining families from Tyrol and Swiss barons before becoming the property of Generalmajor Jakob von Washington in the 19th century. In 1912 the banker Edgar Ladenburg acquired it, only to be dispossessed by the Nazis in 1939. After restitution in 1946 the Rosewick family from Stuttgart regained possession. Visitors approach across a bridge that spans the old moat and enter a compact four-storey structure with stepped gables on east and west fronts. A small tower projects from the southeast corner, adding to the medieval silhouette. Inside the simple rectangular plan remains clearly visible, and the moat still encircles three sides of the building. The park around the castle offers quiet walks beneath mature trees.
