HochX

HochX stands in Munich’s Au district, a converted 1883 building that once housed a workers’ hall. The theatre occupies the former Kolping hall on Entenbachstraße, a street with a long tradition of community gatherings. After years as a temporary home for the Schauburg, the site was empty until 2016. A full renovation returned the building to cultural use and reopened it as HochX. In 2021 the venue received the national Theatre Prize of the Federal Government. The house programmes contemporary live art across theatre, dance, performance, sound experiments, media art and public-space projects. Every month it presents a children’s theatre matinée alongside workshops for all ages. International festivals such as DANCE, SPIELART and Rodeo bring touring productions to its stage. The main hall seats up to 165 people on movable seats, while the foyer accommodates smaller events for fifty guests. Antonia Beermann, Ute Gröbel and Benno Heisel share artistic leadership, supported by Susanne Weinzierl as managing director. The team works with the Free Performing Arts Association of Bavaria and the Munich Free Scene network. Artists use the space to test new aesthetics and working methods, aiming to professionalise independent practice and connect creators across disciplines.
