Jagdschloss Neudeck

Jagdschloss Neudeck was a Wittelsbacher hunting lodge in the Au district of Munich. It stood near the Isar river on land later divided between a monastery and a prison. The lodge began as a small hunting seat built around 1511 for Duke Wilhelm IV. Later Duke Albrecht V enlarged the building and added pleasure gardens. By the early 17th century the site had become a summer retreat for the court. The lodge lost its importance after the Thirty Years’ War and the building of Schloss Nymphenburg. In 1747 a porcelain factory opened in the lodge but moved away within fourteen years. The adjacent monastery, founded in 1623, became a military hospital and then a prison. After secularisation the church was demolished in 1902 and the remaining monastery buildings now house the Munich district administration. Visitors today see the former monastery complex rather than the vanished lodge. The surviving wings form part of the Landratsamt München. The site lies in the quiet Au quarter, close to the river and to the modern prison that replaced the old monastery jail.
