Klecks Theater Hannover

The Klecks-Theater Hannover is a theatre for children and young people in the southern district of the city. It occupies a former magazine building that once served as a scenery store for the royal court theatre. The red-brick hall in the Südstadt shows how industrial heritage can be turned into a lively stage. The theatre was founded in 1987 by Harald Schandry as a touring company rooted in emancipatory youth theatre. Since 1994 it has been based in the listed Alte Magazin, drawing around 25 000 spectators a year and making it one of the most visited free stages in Lower Saxony. Performances travel to kindergartens, schools, prisons and open-air festivals across Germany. Productions favour the actors’ presence over elaborate sets, adapting each show to the space it meets. Inside, the auditorium is arranged as a proscenium stage but can be reconfigured for in-the-round or traverse layouts. The seating is often reduced to create a closer bond between performers and audience. Theatre-education projects run with the Klosterkammer Hannover have brought drama workshops to schools and youth clubs across the region. Recent award-winning pieces such as ‘Untenrum’ prove the theatre’s continuing relevance for young audiences.
