Totteridge and Whetstone tube station

Totteridge & Whetstone is a London Underground station on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line. It stands on the north side of Totteridge Lane in the London Borough of Barnet, just east of the Dollis Brook which marks the boundary between Totteridge and Whetstone. The station opened in 1872 as Totteridge, built by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway. It became Totteridge & Whetstone in 1874 after the Great Northern Railway took over the line. In 1940 the station began serving Northern line trains as part of the Northern Heights project. The station retains much of its original Victorian architecture, with a passenger hall and waiting rooms still in use. It has two platforms reached by flights of stairs, and only a small staff during peak hours. A former goods yard now serves as the station car park, while the platforms have separate male and female toilets. The station is in fare zone 4 and links Whetstone with Totteridge to the west. Trains run north to High Barnet every few minutes and south to Battersea via Charing Cross or to Morden via Bank. Totteridge Lane provides access to local bus routes that connect the station with surrounding areas. The station’s Victorian character and quiet location make it a modest but distinctive part of London’s transport heritage. Its position between two suburbs gives it a local importance without the crowds of central stations. The Dollis Brook nearby adds a natural setting to the station’s surroundings.
