Greenhill Gardens

Greenhill Gardens is a small public park in High Barnet, part of the London Borough of Barnet. It covers 1.6 hectares and centres on an ornamental lake with a wooded island that draws many birds. Mature trees dot the grassed areas, and the park is recognised locally for its wildlife. The land once belonged to the Greenhill estate, most of which was built on in the twentieth century. East Barnet Council bought the site in July 1926 for £20,000 before it became part of the London Borough of Barnet in 1965. The park’s lake and island provide a quiet spot for watching waterfowl and garden birds. Paths wind around the water and through the surrounding trees, giving visitors shaded walks. The grassy slopes offer open space for sitting or picnics under the scattered oaks and planes. Access points lie at Pricklers Hill and Greenhill Park, linking the gardens to nearby streets. Its designation as a site of local importance for nature conservation reflects the variety of plants and animals found there. Visitors find a peaceful green space with benches beside the lake and along the tree-lined paths. The island in the lake is left wild, adding to the habitat for birds such as moorhens and herons. The mature trees include London planes and horse chestnuts, casting dappled shade over the lawns. The park’s layout keeps most of the lake visible from the main paths, so wildlife can be watched without disturbance. Its modest size makes it easy to explore in a short visit, yet it offers a surprising amount of greenery in a built-up area.
