River Rib

The River Rib is a chalk river in Hertfordshire. It begins near Buckland and flows east, joining the River Lea to the east of Hertford. The river runs parallel to the A10, passing villages such as Chipping, Wyddial, Buntingford, Westmill, Braughing, Puckeridge, and Standon. Its main tributary, the River Quin, joins it at Braughing. The Rib divides villages like Thundridge and Wadesmill before reaching its end. The river once powered an overshot watermill at Ware Park. Before the 1970s, it frequently flooded after heavy autumn rains, but dredging and engineering work resolved this issue. It also served as the main water supply for Buntingford and nearby areas until a pump was installed. The Rib’s chalk bed keeps the water clear and alkaline, supporting diverse wildlife. Visitors can walk along the river’s banks, following paths through quiet countryside. The chalk stream offers views of water meadows and farmland. Near Braughing, the River Quin joins, adding to the scenery. The Rib’s clear waters reflect the sky, making it a peaceful spot for a stroll. Its gentle flow and rural setting provide a quiet escape from nearby towns.
