Church of Saint Leonard, Bengeo

The Church of Saint Leonard stands on a hillside above the Beane and Lea valleys in Bengeo, Hertford. Built around 1120, it is the oldest building in Hertford and a Grade I listed Norman church. The church once served as Bengeo’s parish church until Holy Trinity Church opened in 1855. After years of neglect, the Gosselin family restored it between 1884 and 1894 under architect John Thomas Micklethwaite. A small anchorite’s cell from the 13th century still clings to the north-east end of the chancel. The church’s flint walls and stone dressings show its Norman origins, while later additions include a 19th-century brick porch and a wooden bellcote housing a 1636 bell. The south doorway remains from the 12th century, though its door dates to the 14th. The apse is rare in Hertfordshire, found only in two other medieval churches. Inside, medieval wall paintings were uncovered in 1938 during work led by William Weir. Visitors find a simple nave with plastered walls and an open collar-beam roof. The anchorite’s cell, measuring eight feet by six, has a recess for a bed and seat. The church hosts summer Sunday services, exhibitions and concerts. Its quiet hillside setting overlooks the valleys below, offering a peaceful place to reflect on centuries of history.
