Morecambe Winter Gardens

The Winter Gardens stands in Morecambe, Lancashire, as a Grade II* listed building. Designed by Mangnall and Littlewood with Frank Matcham as consulting architect, it opened in 1897 as the Victoria Pavilion Theatre. Originally part of a larger complex built in 1878, it included seawater baths, bars and a ballroom. The theatre closed in 1977 and was listed the same year. Campaigns for its restoration began in 1986 and continue today. The building is recognised as one of Morecambe’s most significant features. In 2008 it was listed as a key remnant of the resort’s nineteenth-century entertainment buildings. The Friends of the Winter Gardens formed in 1986 to campaign for its preservation. In 2021 it received part of a £35 million grant from the Culture Recovery Fund. In 2023 it was awarded a further £2.8 million from the Cultural Investment Fund. The volunteers running the trust were given the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2023. Visitors find a grand theatre building that survives from the 1890s. The interior reflects the work of Frank Matcham, a leading theatre architect of the period. Though the ballroom was demolished in 1982, the theatre remains as a reminder of Morecambe’s past as a holiday resort. The site has also featured on the ghost-hunting show Most Haunted. Today it stands as a focus for community efforts to restore and reopen the building.
