Alhambra Theatre

The Alhambra stands on Morecambe’s West End promenade, a curved stretch of Victorian seafront built to replace the old West End Market. Its Moorish name came from Granada but the style is local, designed by Herbert Howarth for developers John Gardner and John Scott. The ground floor once housed a covered market with shops and a restaurant, while the upper tiers hosted variety shows and films. A fire in 1970 gutted the interior but left the walls intact, allowing it to reopen three years later as a dance club. The building’s Dutch gable and sun-burner turret were lost, though the main structure still dominates the promenade. Laurence Olivier filmed part of The Entertainer here in 1960, and the stage once welcomed Chung Ling Soo, later hailed as one of the world’s greatest magicians. After decades as a cinema, wartime requisition, and later a club, the venue closed in 2016 before local developer Ian Bond restored it. Volunteers now run it as a multi-purpose space, supported by the Morecambe Alhambra Theatre Trust. Nearby renovations include the Midland Hotel and the Winter Gardens, linking the seafront’s cultural revival. Visitors find a flexible venue hosting festivals, club nights, and community events. The ground floor still holds shops, including the region’s largest angling store, while the upper spaces accommodate performances and gatherings. Bay windows on the original theatre floor look out over Morecambe Bay, and suspended ceilings conceal the remnants of the old balcony above. The Alhambra’s programme ranges from punk and goth events to theatre festivals, making it a hub for the North West’s cultural scene.
