Kloster Marienborn

Marienborn is a former Cistercian nunnery on the edge of the Eifel hills near Zülpich-Hoven. Founded in 1188 by nuns from Sankt Thomas an der Kyll, it soon became a centre of learning and piety. The present church still holds the Hovener Madonna, one of the Rhineland’s finest 12th-century Romanesque sculptures. Inside the apse Roman bricks with Latin inscriptions point to an earlier matron sanctuary. The site also remembers Saint Hermann Joseph of Steinfeld, who died here in 1246 while serving as a Lenten preacher. The monastery grew through gifts from local nobles and bishops. In 1191 Pope Celestine III confirmed its possessions, which included mills, farms and entire villages. Two daughter houses were founded from Marienborn: Walberberg in 1197 and Fröndenberg in 1218. Repeated fires and wars forced the community to rebuild and adapt, yet by the 18th century a new Baroque layout stood complete. After secularisation in 1802 the complex passed through private hands until the Cellitinnen of Cologne bought it in 1888. Visitors enter through the restored church with its north cloister wing and the Hermann-Joseph Chapel. The former dormitory now forms part of the psychiatric clinic, its quiet corridors echoing the long history of care. The apse’s stately columns and pilasters recall the 13th-century rebuilding after the saint’s death. Beyond lie meadows and the gentle slopes of the Eifel, a peaceful setting for a place that has sheltered both prayer and healing across eight centuries.
