Burg Kirchzarten

The Burg Kirchzarten (Hochstauden) is a vanished medieval lowland castle near Kirchzarten in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. It once stood about 1,000 metres north-west of the old Talvogtei water castle, now the village hall. The site lies on the Hochstauden field in the north-west of the community. Little is known about its history. No traces remain above ground today; the only evidence is a faint outline visible from the air. A similar site, Burg Kirchzarten (Hagenmatten), lies about 500 metres to the south-east. Visitors walk across open farmland where the earthworks once marked the moat and ramparts. The quiet fields give little hint of the vanished stronghold. In clear weather the faint crop marks can be spotted from nearby paths. The spot offers a quiet place to reflect on the vanished past.
