Burg Kirchzarten

The Burg Kirchzarten stands as the faint remains of a medieval lowland castle near the village of Kirchzarten in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. It lies about 500 metres north-west of the former Talvogtei water castle, now the town hall, in an area called Hagenmatten. Archaeologists believe it was probably a moated castle, though no visible traces remain above ground today. The site is only recognisable from the air as a crop mark or soil discolouration. A similar vanished castle, Burg Kirchzarten (Hochstauden), stands half a kilometre further north-west in the same landscape. Little is known about the castle’s history or who built it. No records, ruins or artefacts have survived to tell its story. The site appears only on old cadastral maps and in aerial surveys from the 20th century. Historians such as Alfons Zettler and Thomas Zotz have included it in regional castle inventories, but even their detailed studies offer no firm dates or owners. The lack of written sources leaves the purpose and fate of the castle open to speculation. Visitors today see an ordinary meadow where the castle once stood. There are no walls, towers or information boards to mark the spot. The surrounding fields and woods stretch away quietly, unchanged by centuries of farming. From the air the earthworks appear as a darker rectangle, hinting at foundations buried beneath the soil. The nearest landmark is the modern town hall, a reminder of how the landscape has shifted from medieval stronghold to local government centre.
