Klosterkirche Schwanberg

The Klosterkirche Schwanberg is a Roman Catholic church in Bad Schwanberg, Steiermark. It stands at the southern end of the main square, facing the town centre. The church is protected as a historic monument. The church was consecrated in 1714 and built to plans based on Graz’s Capuchin church. After the Capuchin monastery closed, the building passed to the local Heilmoorbad spa. Recent restorations have renewed the nave, choir and furnishings, while work continues on the Loreto chapel. Today the church mainly hosts weekday Masses and funeral services. The broad nave and narrower choir are covered by barrel vaults with cross ribs. A side chapel on the east side opens into the monastery courtyard as the Loreto chapel. Steps from the main square lead up to the main door under a vaulted passage, and the church front doubles as a war memorial. Inside, the high altar and side altars date from the church’s construction. The high altar painting, showing the Guardian Angel with scenes of coronation, was done by Johannes Vitus Hauckh in 1709. The Loreto chapel contains a classical-style altar brought from the Capuchin church in Leibnitz, flanked by statues of Saints Joachim and Anna.
