Adelssitz Kirchberg
The Adelssitz Kirchberg was a vanished medieval castle in Kirchberg an der Iller, a village in the Biberach district of Upper Swabia. It stood on the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes, a line of frontier forts from Roman times. Nothing of the original structure remains today, yet its site still carries traces of the past. The castle was built in 1244 by the local Lords of Kirchberg. Over the centuries it passed through several noble hands: the Vogts of Schellenberg, the Freyberg family, the imperial abbey of Rot an der Rot, and finally the collegiate foundation of Gutenzell. Each owner left its mark on the estate before it faded from view. Now the spot holds the village church, the parish house and the kindergarten. The old moat and ramparts have long since been levelled, but the gentle rise where the castle once stood still rises above the Iller valley. From here the view stretches across the wide river meadows to the distant hills.
