Sulzberg

The Sulzberg stands 1,041 metres above sea level in the Bohemian Forest of Upper Austria. It belongs to the municipality of Ulrichsberg in Rohrbach district, where the Hintenberger and Ramenaibach streams rise. Several springs here supply water to Rohrbach district. The mountain lies within the 9,350-hectare Europe-protected Böhmerwald-Mühltäler area. It is also part of the 22,302-hectare Important Bird Area Böhmerwald and Mühltal. The 1967 Moldaublick observation tower offers wide views. The European long-distance trail E6 crosses the summit as part of the Nordwaldkammweg. Five cross-country ski trails run over the mountain, including the Christian-Hoffmann-Loipe named after the skier. The Sulzberg’s granite closely resembles Eisgarner Granit. Its ridge carries acid spruce-fir-beech woods, while the western slope holds acid beech forests and the waterlogged plateaus support wet spruce or spruce-fir woods. Auerhuhn, or capercaillie, were confirmed breeding here in 2008.
