Burg Leipferdingen

Burg Leipferdingen stands on a narrow ridge 770 metres above sea level between the Aitrach and Neuvert valleys, about two and a half kilometres west of Leipferdingen. The local name Heidenlöcher recalls its past as a prehistoric or possibly Iron Age hilltop fortification. A single earthen wall, once up to seven metres thick at its base, still curves along the ridge. A deep, pointed ditch runs in front of the wall, showing where attackers would have struggled to climb. The whole structure stretched for more than one hundred and thirty metres along the spur. Archaeologists recognise the site as an important example of early defensive building in the region. Studies by Hansjürgen Brachmann and Hans-Wilhelm Heine describe how these fortifications developed in the early Middle Ages. Excavations led by Christoph Morrissey and Dieter Müller mapped the surviving earthworks in detail. Their work shows how the wall and ditch were designed to slow any assault. The site helps explain how local communities protected themselves centuries ago. Visitors walk a quiet woodland path to the ridge where the earthworks remain. The view stretches across the surrounding valleys and farmland. Sections of the old wall rise clearly above the ground, its width still impressive after centuries of weathering. The ditch beside it is deep enough to see from the path. The place is peaceful now, but the remains speak of the people who once gathered here for defence.
