St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church stands in the centre of Magor, a village in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is a Grade I listed building and the lead church of the Netherwent Ministry Area, which serves around thirty-two thousand people. The church may once have been dedicated to Cadwaladr, the last Welsh ruler to call himself King of Britain, who died in 664. It later became St Leonard’s before being rededicated to St Mary during a mid-19th-century restoration. The church is noted for its ambitious Decorated-style architecture, though not all its ambitions were realised. Its tower is prominent and integral to the structure, and the fourteenth- or fifteenth-century porch features buttresses adorned with fierce gargoyles and pinnacles. Inside, nineteenth-century stained glass includes The Good Shepherd, made by Kempe & Co between 1930 and 1931. The churchyard holds the grave of Mansel Thomas, a Welsh composer who died in 1986. Beside the church stands the ruined Procurator’s House, a sixteenth-century vicarage. Visitors find a church of striking architectural ambition, with a tower that dominates the skyline. The porch’s fierce carvings catch the eye, while the stained glass casts coloured light across the interior. The churchyard offers quiet space among gravestones, including that of Mansel Thomas. The ruined Procurator’s House nearby adds a sense of history to the setting. The church remains a focal point for the village and its surrounding communities.
