Rote Flora

The Rote Flora stands in Hamburg’s Sternschanze district, a former theatre built in 1835 on Schulterblatt. After years as a variety theatre, cinema and bargain store, the building became a squatted social centre in November 1989. The occupiers declared it a free space for autonomous life, resisting plans to turn it into a commercial venue. Over the decades it has grown into a hub for left-wing and anarchist activism, linked to similar projects across Europe. The collective organises its own affairs without outside control, running a music venue, infoshop and café inside. A bicycle workshop and rehearsal rooms share the space with archives of social movements. The site matters because it has survived repeated threats of eviction and demolition. In the early 1990s the city tried to formalise its status but the collective refused. Later, when a developer bought the building, the collective campaigned for years to keep it open. Large demonstrations in 2013 turned violent before the borough agreed to protect the site as a cultural centre. During the 2017 G20 summit the Rote Flora became a focus of debate after riots in the area. The collective distanced itself from the violence, while right-wing commentators called for its closure. Inside, visitors find a bar and café where people gather day and night. The infoshop stocks books and zines on political and social issues, and the archive preserves records of local struggles. Rehearsal rooms host bands and activists’ meetings, while the bicycle workshop fixes bikes for the neighbourhood. Outside, Achidi-John Platz marks the spot where a man died in police custody in 2001. The collective posts rules against discrimination at the door, making clear what behaviour will not be tolerated. The building remains a living experiment in self-rule and a landmark of alternative culture in Hamburg.
