Sands Bank

Sands Bank is a Local Nature Reserve of 11.1 hectares on a chalk slope near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. It belongs to West Wycombe Estates and is managed by Wycombe District Council. The site mixes woodland, scrub and grassland facing south. Some beech trees have stood there for four centuries. Younger trees include cherry, holly, yew and ash. The reserve supports a wide range of wildlife. Wood spurge and goldilocks buttercup grow among the ground plants. Mammals such as roe deer and hazel dormice live here. A variety of fungi appears seasonally. The chalk slope and south-facing aspect create a warm microclimate. Access is from Heathfield Road. Visitors walk paths through the mixed habitats. Beech woodland offers dappled shade. Open grassland provides views across the valley. Scrub areas shelter smaller birds and insects. The reserve shows how chalk slopes support diverse plant and animal life.
