St. Mary's Church, Chesham

St Mary’s Church stands in the old heart of Chesham, a Buckinghamshire town set in the Chiltern Hills where the River Chess begins. The church occupies a site with deep roots, built partly on the remains of a Bronze Age stone circle made of puddingstones. Parts of the present building date from the 12th century, though much was reshaped in the 15th and 17th centuries. By the 19th century the structure had become unsafe, so George Gilbert Scott carried out major repairs in the 1860s. Later, in the 20th century, Robert Potter strengthened the building once more. The church is listed Grade I and belongs to the Diocese of Oxford. The church’s history reflects the wider story of Chesham and its people. For centuries it served the largest parish in Buckinghamshire and had two vicars appointed by local families and monastic houses. After the Dissolution, the Earls of Bedford and private owners held the advowson until the Duke of Bedford reunited the parish in 1769. In the 19th century the town grew quickly, and reforms by Bishop Samuel Wilberforce split the parish into four. These were later reunited under St Mary’s in the 1980s and 1990s. Inside, the church mixes Romanesque, Gothic and Perpendicular styles. A 12th-century window survives in the north aisle, while the 15th-century clerestory and two-storey south porch show later craftsmanship. The nave arcades have octagonal piers and unusual half-pyramid springers noted by Nikolaus Pevsner. The square crenellated tower carries an octagonal lead-covered spire. Fragments of medieval stained glass include the arms of the Cheyne family and traces of coloured heraldic glass. Outside, the churchyard preserves the ancient stone circle beneath its foundations, linking the present building to a much older place of worship.
