Cultural heritage D-7-7532-0152 in Aichach

Schloss Griesbeckerzell was once a small fortified manor in the village of Griesbeckerzell, now part of Aichach in the Aichach-Friedberg district of Swabia. The site first appears in records in 1359 and 1371, when local nobles and the village itself were mentioned. The original owners, the Griesbecke family, died out in the 14th century. Control then passed to another family from Fischach, followed by the Zelter family and, from 1500 to 1827, the Lords of Burgau. The Baroque palace standing in the village centre was built in 1698 by Johann Jakob von Burgau. It served as the heart of the Hofmark, a medieval form of landed estate. By 1854 the building had been demolished, leaving only traces beneath the ground. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation now recognises these remains as a protected archaeological site. Visitors can walk through the quiet village lanes where the palace once stood. The site is marked by a simple information board describing its past. The surrounding fields and old farmhouses give a sense of the rural setting that once surrounded the manor. No buildings survive above ground, but the earth still holds the foundations of walls and cellars from the 17th and 18th centuries.
