Schloss Obergriesbach

Schloss Obergriesbach stands in the village of Obergriesbach in the Aichach-Friedberg district of Bavaria. The site began in 1124 when Ludlof von Hahnreith built a castle and a St Stephen’s chapel. In 1468 Wigulaeus von Weichs took over the estate, and in 1730 Reichsgräfin Marie Violante Theresia von Thurn und Taxis bought the Hofmark. Since 1831 the Affing Freiherren von Gravenreuth have owned the property, using the castle mainly as a dowager house. The present building is a long rectangular structure with a hipped roof dating from the first half of the 18th century. Nearby is a similarly elongated service wing with a mansard roof from the early 19th century. The old judge’s house, where the Hofmark’s Pfleger and Richter once administered justice and upheld local morals, became the Schlosscafé in November 1948. Visitors came from far and wide to enjoy the renovated rooms and tasteful interior close to the castle and its peaceful garden. A notable feature is the castle’s history of distinguished guests. The Rockefeller heirs, Princess Pilar of Bavaria with Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, and former minister-president Alfons Goppel all visited the café. Today the café is used only for private events, leaving the buildings and their surroundings to be admired from outside.
