Calouste Gulbenkian Museum
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum stands in Lisbon’s northern Parque de Santa Gertrudes. The park and museum buildings were designed together so that art and landscape form a single experience. A T-shaped main building houses the classical antiquities and European galleries, while the modern art centre sits at the southern edge. The collection is one of the world’s finest private holdings. It ranges from Egyptian and Mesopotamian pieces to French 18th-century goldwork and jewels by René Lalique. Works by Rembrandt, Monet, Rubens and Turner are shown alongside Islamic metalwork and Chinese porcelain. Around 1 000 objects are on permanent display from a total of 6 000, chosen under Gulbenkian’s rule of ‘only the best’. Visitors follow two separate circuits. The first presents Greco-Roman sculpture, ancient Near Eastern ivories and Persian metalwork in softly lit rooms. The second moves through ivory carvings, illuminated manuscripts and Renaissance panels to French decorative art and Lalique’s glittering jewels. Outside, the park offers woodland paths, terraces and water features that frame the architecture and the city beyond.
