Untersberg

The Untersberg is a striking massif on the northern edge of the Berchtesgaden Alps, straddling the border between Germany and Austria. It rises near Salzburg, where the Salzach Valley meets the Salzburg Basin, with the Hoher Göll and Watzmann as its closest neighbours. Two-thirds of the mountain lies in Germany, but its steep northern edge overlooks the Austrian city less than sixteen kilometres away. The Berchtesgaden Hochthron, its highest point, reaches 1,973 metres. The mountain gained fame as the backdrop for the opening and closing scenes of the 1965 film *The Sound of Music*. An 1829 opera, *Der Untersberg* by Johann Nepomuk von Poißl, also bears its name. The Untersberg is worth visiting for its dramatic scenery and cultural links. The cable car from Sankt Leonhard climbs 1,320 metres in just eight and a half minutes, carrying visitors to the Geiereck spur at 1,776 metres. Over four hundred caves pockmark the limestone massif, including the Schellenberg Ice Cave and the vast Riesending Cave. The mountain’s pale Untersberg Marble has clad buildings such as Salzburg Cathedral for centuries. Legends speak of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa sleeping inside the mountain, his beard growing round a table until the world’s end. At the top, wide views stretch across the Alps to Salzburg and the Salzach Valley. Trails lead to the Berchtesgaden Hochthron and other peaks for hikers willing to climb. The Geiereck station offers a café and terraces where visitors can rest. Below, the Almbach valley holds the last working marble ball mill, a reminder of the region’s industrial past. The mountain’s caves and mills, along with its cinematic and operatic fame, make it a place of both natural wonder and cultural interest.
