Pfarrkirche Palterndorf
The Roman Catholic parish church in Palterndorf stands on a low circular mound in the heart of the village, surrounded by the quiet farmland of northern Lower Austria. Built as a former fortified church, its sturdy walls and tower rise above the rooftops of Palterndorf-Dobermannsdorf. The church belongs to the deanery of Zistersdorf and sits under national monument protection. Its origins trace back to the Kuenring family around 1290. The German Order of Knights later took charge of the parish. The church blends Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles across its centuries. The nave’s core is Romanesque with Gothic additions, while the tower and choir date from the 15th century. A Baroque north chapel was added at the end of the 17th century. Major changes came in 1782 when the church was extended and remodelled. Restorations followed in 1936 and 1958. Inside, the nave has a flat barrel vault supported by pilasters and an 18th-century west gallery. The narrower choir, raised slightly, features ribbed vaulting with keystones. Outside, the churchyard is enclosed by thick stone walls built for defence. A Baroque gateway with sculpted niches marks the entrance. Inside the old cemetery lie worn gravestones dated 1699 and 1746. Before the gate stands an 18th-century crucifixion group. The west front shows a plain late-Baroque façade with pilasters and a curved gable crowned by vases. The tower, three storeys high, has paired sound openings and a bulbous dome from the 18th century. Inside, the high altar holds a Madonna figure from about 1700, while the organ was built in 1884 by Josef Haucke.
