Church of St Mary, Rogiet

The Church of St Mary stands in Rogiet, a small rural village on the Caldicot Levels eight miles west of Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales. Built in the Gothic Decorated style, the church has a high tower, a short nave and a lower chancel which together form a memorable profile. The tower includes an external stair-turret that ends in an unusual octagonal cap. Dressings around the windows and tower are made of Triassic stone. Inside, notable stained glass catches the light. The church was originally dedicated to St Hilary, a name that may refer to St Eleri or to St Hilary of Arles. The building dates from the thirteenth century, with significant fourteenth-century additions including the tower. Later work in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries renovated and rebuilt parts of the structure. In 2001 St Mary’s became part of the Rectorial Benefice of Caldicot alongside two other local churches. By 2011 the church faced closure because of scarce parish funds. Despite this, the church remains a Grade II* listed building. Visitors find a quiet country church set among fields on the flat Caldicot Levels. The interior holds notable stained glass and the tower’s external stair-turret offers a view over the surrounding landscape. The short nave and lower chancel create an intimate space inside. The Triassic stone dressings add texture to the walls and windows. The church’s profile, with its high tower and lower body, stands out against the flat fields.
