Hammersmith tube station

Hammersmith station stands in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, on the Piccadilly and District lines. It sits below Hammersmith bus station in a cutting, with the main entrance on Hammersmith Broadway. The two lines share platforms for cross-platform interchange. On the District line it lies between Ravenscourt Park and Barons Court, while on the Piccadilly line it is between Acton Town and Barons Court. The station belongs to fare zone two. The station opened in 1874 as the western end of the District Railway. In 1906 the Piccadilly line began services here, and in 1932 the western extension required rebuilding with four platforms. A 2003 derailment just outside the station led to changes in track inspection and maintenance. Parts of the original 19th-century tiling were saved and now frame a mosaic of Hammersmith Bridge in the north ticket hall. Visitors find step-free access via lifts installed in 2013. The north ticket hall displays the salvaged mosaic framed by historic tiles. Above ground, Hammersmith Broadway links the station to the bus garage and shopping centre. The separate Circle and Hammerssth & City lines station lies a short distance to the north-west across the Broadway.
