Hammersmith tube station

Hammersmith station stands on Beadon Road in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It is the western end of the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, with Goldhawk Road the next stop east. The station lies in fare zone two and is close to the separate District and Piccadilly lines station across Hammersmith Broadway. The two stations are about sixty metres apart, though the crossings make the walk longer. The Circle line has served Hammersmith since December 2009 after platform extensions finished in mid-2011. The present building opened in December 1868, replacing an earlier station opened in June 1864. From 1877 the Metropolitan Railway ran trains to Richmond over lines now part of the District line, using a junction just north of the station. A visible viaduct fragment remains west of the District and Piccadilly lines platforms. This service closed at the end of 1906 once electric trains took over. London buses serve the station day and night from the nearby bus station. A short walk away is the separate Hammersmith station for the District and Piccadilly lines. Part of the old Grove Road station still appears in records near the site.
