Karl-Marx-Denkmal

The Karl-Marx-Denkmal in Neubrandenburg is a bronze statue of the philosopher Karl Marx. It stands in a small park called the Schwanenteich, near the Friedrich-Engels-Ring. The sculptor Gerhard Thieme created the work in 1969 for the 20th anniversary of the DDR’s founding. After years in storage, it was re-erected in 2018 to mark Marx’s 200th birthday. The statue is 2.20 metres tall and weighs about 400 kilograms. Marx is shown in an open coat, left hand on his hip and right arm bent. His gaze is directed into the distance. The sculpture has been moved several times and was even damaged by vandalism. It was repaired and returned to its place in 2022. Visitors find the statue beside the Schwanenteich, a quiet park area. The bronze figure stands on a slender support, giving the impression of floating. Nearby is the Haus der Kultur und Bildung, a cultural centre. The park itself is bordered by the Friedrich-Engels-Ring, a tree-lined street.
