Brigitte-Reimann-Literaturhaus

The Brigitte-Reimann-Literaturhaus stands in Neubrandenburg, a town in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. It occupies a quiet street corner in Gartenstraße, replacing the house where the writer Brigitte Reimann lived until her death in 1973. The original building collapsed during renovation, so a new centre was built in its place. The literature house keeps her memory alive through a gallery and her preserved library, donated by the city in 1995. Personal items from her estate are also displayed inside. The centre has won recognition for its work. In 2020 it received the Hartmut-Vogel-Preis for literature mediation. The award honours efforts to bring writers and readers together. Behind its programmes is the Literaturzentrum Neubrandenburg e.V., a local association that organises readings and discussions. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern now provides the necessary funds for its operation. Visitors find a bright, modern space with a gallery and Reimann’s own bookshelves. Her desk and other belongings from her flat are arranged in glass cases. The rooms are arranged for small exhibitions and author events. Outside, the street is calm, lined with trees and typical brick houses. The setting reflects the peaceful north-German landscape she once described in her writing.
