Kammerdorf Castle

The Turmhügel Kammerdorf is a vanished medieval earthwork castle in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria. It stands on a low rise in a meadow beside the Chamb river, 475 metres east of Kammerdorf village. The site was once a small water-filled stronghold built by local nobles in the 12th century. The lords of Kammerdorf, ministerial knights serving the Diepoldinger and later the Wittelsbachs, made it their family seat. By the 14th century the castle was abandoned and left to decay. Aerial photographs taken in 1982 revealed the buried layout: a central stone tower measuring ten by ten metres, surrounded by a broad moat fed from the Chamb. Today the raised platform and shallow ditches mark where the tower and outer defences once stood. The whole area remains protected as an archaeological monument. Visitors walk across the grassy mound and trace the outline of the vanished walls in the soft earth.
