Schlossstrasse 12/13 (Neustrelitz)

The Kulturquartier Mecklenburg-Strelitz stands in Neustrelitz’s Schloßstraße, a building complex that once housed the ducal mint and later became the imperial post office. The present structure, completed in 1901, mixes neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic styles with mosaic panels showing the years 1899–1901 and postal symbols. Two symmetrical entrances open into a two-storey block whose façade is divided by large round-headed and stilted windows. Inside, a widened passage from 1928 leads to a courtyard where a modern annexe now holds reading rooms and galleries. The site matters because it brings together the city museum, the public library and the Karbe-Wagner Archive under one roof. The museum’s 800 exhibits trace the history of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from ducal collections lost in the 1945 castle fire to later private donations. The library offers 50 000 items on 500 square metres, while the archive preserves Walter Karbe’s legacy and Annaliese Wagner’s regional research. Since 2021 the complex has also managed the nearby Schlosskirche. Visitors enter through the original post-office doors into a hall that still shows the telegraph service’s lightning-flash mosaics. The museum’s permanent display occupies the upper floor, the library and archive share a quiet reading room on the ground floor, and a café opens onto a garden where concerts and dance evenings take place. The Daniel Sanders Hall hosts readings and small concerts, linking the building’s postal past with its new cultural life.
