Landestheater Neustrelitz

The Landestheater Neustrelitz stands in the small town of Neustrelitz in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. It is the main venue of the Theatre and Orchestra Company Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz, with 400 seats in the main auditorium. The theatre presents operas, plays, philharmonic concerts and ballet performances by its own ensembles. In summer the neighbouring Schlossgarten provides the setting for the Schlossgartenfestspiele, with open-air operetta and play productions. The theatre has a long history dating back to 1755, when a riding school stood on the site. In 1775 it became a comedy and ballroom house, and by 1779 it was called the Mecklenburgisch-Strelitzsches Hoftheater. Famous performers such as Henriette Sontag and Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient appeared there. The house was rebuilt twice after fires, first in 1928 under the Munich architect Max Littmann and again in 1954 after war damage. A bronze bust of Friedrich Wolf stands outside, commemorating the playwright and politician whose name the theatre bore for decades. Inside, visitors find a modern auditorium designed in the 1950s while the exterior retains its original appearance. The theatre’s archive, opened in 2015, holds documents from the 18th century to the present. The Schlossgarten nearby offers a pleasant walk between performances. The building itself is a quiet presence in the town centre, its classical lines softened by surrounding greenery.
