Durlston Country Park

Durlston Country Park lies on the Dorset coast near Swanage, covering 320 acres of coastline, downs and woodland. It stretches along the Isle of Purbeck and forms part of the South West Coast Path. The park includes Durlston Castle, the Great Globe, Tilly Whim Caves and Anvil Point Lighthouse. It also serves as a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Owned by Dorset Council, the park offers walks, views, climbing and wildlife experiences. The park supports a wide range of wildlife across its varied habitats. Over 250 bird species have been recorded, including 400 guillemots breeding on the sea-cliffs. More than 500 wildflowers and 500 moths grow here, along with 33 butterfly species. Migrating birds rest here in spring and autumn. The limestone cliffs provide popular climbing spots such as Subliminal and Boulder Ruckle. Rangers publish a daily wildlife diary online. George Burt built Durlston Castle in 1887 as a restaurant for his estate. The Great Globe, a three-metre limestone sphere, is engraved with a world map. Cast-iron bollards from London line the paths, and plaques display quotations from Shakespeare. The visitor centre offers a gallery, cinema room and fossil room. Guided walks, family trails and stargazing events take place regularly. Accessible paths and wheelchairs make the park open to all visitors.
