Schloss Bredenfelde

Schloss Bredenfelde stands in Bredenfelde within the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. Built in the mid-19th century, it is a Tudor-style manor house designed by architect Friedrich Hitzig. Ernst Hans Heinrich von Heyden commissioned the house while his brother Woldemar built Schloss Kartlow nearby. The estate’s landscape plan came from Peter Joseph Lenné, who originally envisaged a symmetrical manor. Construction took place between 1852 and 1854, yet nothing remains of the earlier building. The house is divided by two towers, one round and one octagonal, each topped with different helmets. The von Heyden family coat of arms sits above the south-east entrance. Inside, an entrance hall leads to a grand hall, while most ground-floor rooms have stucco ceilings. The main floor has no corridor; rooms must be entered in sequence. The owner’s living and working rooms were placed in the basement, with children’s and servants’ rooms above. The once 3.5-hectare park survives only as a lime-tree avenue to the old cemetery. Nearby, the inspector’s house and dairy remain from the former estate courtyard. After decades of decay, the building was restored between 1997 and 2002 and now operates as a small hotel with around forty beds.
