Royal Air Force Station Cosford
RAF Cosford stands on the edge of Albrighton village in Shropshire, just northwest of Wolverhampton. It opened in 1938 as a maintenance and training airfield and still serves as a major Royal Air Force training station. The site includes the Defence School of Aeronautical Engineering, the Defence School of Photography, No. 1 Radio School and the RAF School of Physical Training. Fulton barrack block, built before the Second World War, remains one of the largest single barrack buildings in the UK. During the war the station trained 70,000 airmen in engine, airframe and armament trades. The station played key roles in the Second World War, preparing many Spitfires for operational service. It housed a depot for Free Czechoslovak personnel joining the RAF Volunteer Reserve after the Fall of France. The airfield’s original grass runway turned to mud in the winter of 1940–41, leading to the construction of a paved runway 1,048 metres long. RAF Hospital Cosford, opened in 1940, processed more than 13,000 repatriated prisoners of war by 1948. Visitors find the RAF Museum Cosford on the station, displaying historic aircraft and artefacts. The museum occupies part of the technical training area alongside modern teaching facilities. The station’s sports complex, built around an indoor running track, once hosted televised athletics championships. Nearby hangars and workshops still echo with the work of aeronautical engineering students. The surrounding Shropshire countryside provides a quiet backdrop to this active RAF site.
