Church of St Bartholomew

The Collegiate Church of St Bartholomew stands in the quiet village of Tong in Shropshire. Built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier parish church, it replaced a structure first recorded after the Domesday survey. Isabel Lingen initiated the project, securing royal and ecclesiastical support to create a collegiate church and chantry. The Vernons of Haddon Hall later became prominent patrons, adding tombs and memorials that still line its walls. Nearby Tong Castle, once home to the lords of the manor, stood just south-west of the church until its demolition in the 20th century. The Stanley Monument inside bears epitaphs traditionally attributed to William Shakespeare. The church holds rare architectural features, including fan vaulting in a side chapel, unusual in Shropshire. It also contains the fictional grave of Little Nell from Charles Dickens’ *The Old Curiosity Shop*, despite her being an imaginary character. During the English Civil War, it witnessed a minor skirmish, adding a layer of historical significance. Grade I listed, the building has survived with its ornate monuments and elaborate architecture largely intact. Its grandeur has earned comparisons to Westminster Abbey, often ranked among the finest churches in the Midlands and England. Inside, visitors find a rich collection of tombs and memorials, particularly from the Vernon and Stanley families. The Stanley Monument stands out for its inscribed epitaphs, said to be Shakespeare’s work. The church’s interior also includes fine woodwork and stained glass, reflecting centuries of patronage. Outside, the surrounding village retains a peaceful, rural atmosphere, with Tong Castle’s ruins adding a touch of history. The church remains a place where architecture, literature, and local legend intersect.
