Sandilands

Sandilands tram stop sits in the London Borough of Croydon, on the southern edge of the city. It serves the residential streets east of central Croydon along Addiscombe Road. The stop takes its name from the Sandilands Tunnel just beside it. Two tram lines meet here with a sharp bend after the tunnel. In November 2016 a serious derailment happened 150 metres southeast of the stop, killing seven people and injuring more than fifty. The station sits where Tramlink leaves Addiscombe Road and drops into a cutting. West of the stop the tracks run on their own path beside the road as far as Chepstow Road. From there the line shares the road with buses and cars. When Tramlink was built, a few homes had to be demolished near the stop to make space for the cutting and the junction. London Buses routes 119, 194, 198 and 466 stop close by, and passengers can change between bus and tram for free within an hour. Trams run every few minutes in each direction. Off-peak services include six trams an hour to Beckenham Junction and Wimbledon, six to Elmers End and Wimbledon, and eight to New Addington and West Croydon. The low-floor trams are either Bombardier CR4000 or Stadler Variobahn models. The stop provides a quiet link for local journeys across south London.
