Museum in the Kulturbrauerei

The Museum in the Kulturbrauerei stands in a former brewery complex in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district. The building itself dates back to the late 19th century when it formed part of the Schultheiss brewery. Now a protected site, it houses a museum dedicated to modern German history. The focus is on daily life in the German Democratic Republic, exploring how people lived under its political system. The exhibition draws on a wide range of original objects and documents to tell this story. The museum’s permanent display presents around 800 original items alongside over 200 documents, films, sound recordings and personal accounts. These include everyday products, posters, photographs and archive materials that reflect design and culture in the Soviet zone and East Germany. The exhibition examines the gap between the state’s ideals and the realities faced by citizens. It also features a free audioguide available in five languages to help visitors explore the displays. Visitors find a modern museum set within the old brewery’s industrial spaces. The exhibition is arranged to show how political expectations shaped daily routines in the GDR. Original objects and personal stories bring the period to life, offering insight into life behind the Iron Curtain. The building’s preserved architecture adds to the atmosphere, linking past and present. The museum opened in 2013 as part of the Haus der Geschichte foundation’s work.
