St Swithun's church, Nately Scures

St Swithun’s Church stands in the quiet village of Nately Scures in Hampshire. Built of flint and rubble around 1175, it is the smallest ancient parish church in the county. The building is a rare Norman single-cell apsidal church, with only four such examples left in the UK. Its simple design remains largely unchanged since the 12th century. Binstead stone frames the doors and windows, adding a touch of contrast to the flint walls. The church belongs to the United Parish of Newnham and Nately Scures, which includes five other villages and their churches. The church is worth visiting for its remarkable preservation and historical significance. It is considered the best largely unspoilt example of its kind in England. The gallery added in 1591 and the 18th-century roof repairs show how the building has been maintained over centuries. Several notable figures are buried here, including the 1st Baron Dorchester and Lieutenant-General Sir Christopher Wallace. A memorial outside honours Guy Carleton and Thomas Carleton, governors of Quebec and New Brunswick respectively. The church remains open during the day, welcoming visitors without restriction. Inside, the small nave and curved apse create an intimate space for worship. The gallery overlooks the main area, a feature installed late in the 16th century. The flint walls and Binstead stone dressings give the interior a quiet, textured appearance. The churchyard holds graves of local and national figures, adding to the sense of history. Its peaceful setting in the Hampshire countryside makes it a place for reflection. The building’s unassuming size belies its importance as a surviving Norman church.
